Welcome
The Loughborough and District Group recently held their 28th Annual Meeting, at which a cheque for £27,000 was presented to Parminder Summon of the National Charity. Events during the year included: - Annual Dinner Dance (£606), Sponsored Walk (£700), Song Quiz (£441), Street Collection (£459), Two Choirs' Concert (£439), Charities' Fair (£140), B&Q Collection (£338), Table Top Sale at Walton (£55), Music Gig with Supper (£267), Musical Soirée (£599) and Cake Stall (£195). This brings the total donated by the group to over £340,000, for which we must thank the many people of Loughborough and its surrounding area for their donations and support. We should also say "Thank You" for the money donated following bereavement, or as a legacy. Although these donations originate from sad events they enable Cancer Research UK to continue their vital research, offering hope for the future. Nationally a total of £370 million would be raised by the end of this financial year, enabling the charity to fund more scientific treatments, trials and to spend more on prevention. Well over £400,000 will have been raised in Leicestershire just from the fundraising groups in the county. £1.5 million every year goes to the UK Children's Cancer Study Centre at Leicester University, where more than 75% of children with cancer survive. Survival rates for adults are getting better and it is expected that within two generations, adult cancer will be largely controlled. Nationally organised fundraising events include; The Big Breakfast in March, various events to be held in conjunction with the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer whilst the World Cup is on, a Race for Life in Loughborough and also a Stride for Life in Abbey Park, Leicester. The Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute is due to be open in Spring 2006 and will concentrate on genetic research. Our Group At the Annual Meeting it was decided to continue as a less formal group, to be called the "Loughborough and District Friends of Cancer Research UK". The Friends will continue to provide fundraising and to assist with organising events. Our small friendly group has members from Loughborough and the surrounding villages and we welcome new faces to help either on a regular basis or occasionally. Our events range from concerts, coffee mornings, and cake stalls to dances, sponsored walks and flag days. Many hands make light work - so could you lend a hand? Why not become a "friend" and play your part in the battle against Cancer? If you would like to come to one of our events first click on "future attractions" at the top of the page or contact Dawn Hawley.
