Quorndon Letters From Alan Johnson by email I write this at the start of October'02. The village grass verges have just been cut and what a mess they look! (If we're the best kept village, Lord help the others!) I've spoken to a friend, who works for a Parish in Rushcliffe, and he says, "Nobody collects grass cuttings anymore, it'll all rot down eventually." Well, my view is that it looks a mess and if we can't get the job done competently it would be better done less frequently. Am I alone in this view? Too many services are undertaken in a way the service-provider sees fit rather than the way the community want them. If it's a matter of cost, maybe we should cut back on some of the more ephemeral improvements. Also from Alan Johnson by email.... "Nature on your doorstep" I walk my dog on most days, early in the morning in the vicinity of Bull in the Hollow farm, half way to Loughborough. The habitat for birdlife is very varied, ranging from hedges, ditches, reed bed, open fields and streams. During 2002, I've seen lapwing, Jack Snipe, swans (including 1 black escapee!), pink footed geese( up to 200!), reedbunting, sedgewarbler, skylark, bullfinch, oystercatcher, blackcap, swifts (up to 100!), swallows, whitethroat, partridge, pheasant, grasshopper warbler, linnets, garden warbler, sparrowhawk, goshawk, wagtails, green woodpeckers, yellowhammers, jays, goldfinch flocks, heron, gulls, kingfishers etc, etc. For those who haven't experienced it, try the route down
to the canal, along to Barrow, and back over The Slabs. A wonderful weekend
walk, right on our doorstep. To the Editors Some friends and I happily ignored what will be the last-ever 50th jubilee of a British monarch, with tapas and wine in a lively bar overlooking the Mediterranean. Oddly enough, we didn't ask any ratepayers from Quorn to subsidise this event. On the other hand, Quorn Parish Council had deemed that we should subsidise other people's events back home. Hardly fair, I think. Parish Council of the year? Well, they're certainly skilled
at spending other people's money on fripperies without asking them. The Earp Family The Earp family lived in Loughborough and were Bakers, an Earp also ran a corn mill at Quorn in the 1880s onwards. Thomas Earp rode with the Quorn hunt pretty well all of his life. I have all the family connections however would like to contact anyone who may keep records from the hunt also any one who has information regarding the mill, which can add to the infromation I already have. I enjoyed looking at the site if only lots of others would follow. Regards, Chris Earp The Farnham Family The article on Timothy Farnham was of great interest for me as for I am researching the Farnham family. my 10th g-grandfather was Ralph Farnham who came to America in 1635. I would love to touch base and see how far down the line we go before we actually branch off. Please email me at ryellowsubmarine@aol.com Thankyou
