Parish Council News

Parish Council Chairman's Christmas Message

Although we still have numerous challenges to tackle within the parish I am very proud to list some of our successes in this, Her Majesty's Golden Jubilee Year.

Quorn was winner of 'The National Council of the Year' award (whole of England and Wales), and the award for 'The Best Kept Large Village in Leicestershire and Rutland. Charnwood Borough Council are so impressed with these awards that they are to provide a display cabinet for the Council Chamber. Many people within the village contributed to these successes with time and energy. The Council are encouraged that the number of volunteers is growing and thanks everyone.

In October, Marcia Douglas and a group from Rawlins Community College hired a huge skip and filled it with rubbish and debris from the brook flowing through the Stafford Orchard.

The Jubilee celebrations were very successful thanks to Joan Bloodworth, Phil Child and many other helpers. It was lovely to see the decorated shops and houses.

Perhaps the project that gave me most satisfaction in 2002 was the conclusion to the Cave's Field saga. After three and a half years of negotiations, disappointments, highs and lows we finally bought the field for the whole parish in perpetuity.

The Quorndon goes from strength to strength and their funding of wool for the Marathon Scarf on behalf of Rainbows was inspired.

As I write this article, in October, we are looking forward to The New Shakespeare Company's first production, Romeo and Juliet. We wish them great success.

Another first for Quorn this year was the Quorn Branch British Legion Pipe Band. Their first outing was at the opening of the Jubilee May Day and they will also lead the parade on Remembrance Sunday.

The 'switching on' of the Christmas Lights is at 6.30pm on December 6th.at Quorn Cross and then afterwards there is to be a get-together with refreshments at the Church Rooms. I hope to see you there.

As always I send Christmas greetings on behalf of myself, Kate, our Clerk and all the Parish Councillors to you and your families in Quorn and beyond, I know copies of The Quorndon are sent to many different parts of the world.

John Hutchinson
Chairman, Quorn Parish Council

Caves Covenant Limited

As part as the protracted legal action to save the ground a company called Caves Covenant was formed to retrieve and hold a protective covenant. Now, following its purchase by the Parish Council, the ground cannot be sold without the permission of Caves Covenant. Caves Covenant wish to increase the number of shareholders to ensure that it will be almost impossible for the company ever to give permission for such a sale to take place.

Anyone who feels that they would like to become such a shareholder, to help protect the ground for future generations, should contact Keith Croysdale on 558277, keith@quorndon.com or send a self addressed envelope to 13 Spinney Drive, Quorn.

Parish Council Elections 2003

Come next May, there will be elections for all the Parish Councillor positions. The closing date for nominations will be in early April.

If you would like to serve the village by becoming a Parish Councillor, this is your opportunity. But do remember that that there are new regulations governing the conduct of Parish Councillors that you have to be prepared to comply with.

If you want to find out more about being these worthwhile position, then contact John Hutchinson, Chairman Quorn Parish Council on 413895 or Kathryn Paterson, Clerk to the Council at 42 Holbourne Close, Barrow-upon-Soar, Leics LE12 8NE or e-mail: parishcouncil@quorndon.com.

Barrow Road Closure

Barrow Road has now been closed for some months and "The Quorndon" is sure that people in the village are forming their opinions as to the advantages and disadvantages.

You may feel that Barrow Road is now safer, but other near-by streets are being made into rat runs. Children may be getting too "cocky" when playing in the street, and losing their traffic awareness. Difficulties that delivery vehicles have when there is no turning place at the end may be causing you a problem, and you may think this is unsafe to have them reversing back up the road. Potential delays in getting emergency service vehicles to you may be a concern.

Remember, let the Parish Council and the Highways Department at Leicestershire County Council know your views - for or against closure, why you feel like this, and what alternatives you can suggest.
