Quorn Village News
Quorn Library will be full of rockets, aliens and planets this summer as the librarys Reading Planet summer reading promotion is launched. Children, aged 4-11, will be able to pick up a special collector pack and collect stickers for books read. On completion of the pack they will receive a certificate and medal and will be entered in a prize draw. Special events with storytelling and other activities will
be taking place in Quorn and other libraries. Look out for details in
the Library during July. Our members are at present busy planning a Flower Festival in St. Bartholomew's Church to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee and to raise funds for the Rainbows Hospice. We had a most enjoyable morning with Lillian Coleman in March when she did a demonstration "Ready Steady Flowers" and we were pleased to see several visitors. During July and August we will not meet but resume on Thursday Sept 12th at 9.45 am as usual, in the Church Rooms. We would be pleased to welcome any new 'would be' flower arrangers for our workshops and informal flower arranging sessions. Remember this is a very friendly group so do come along; you will be certain of a warm welcome. For further details please phone Carole on 416034 or Frances
on 827225. An informal meeting was held at The White Hart during February, to decide on the running of the Sketch Club for the Spring/Summer season. Due to a lack of a volunteer to take on the overall running of the Club, it was agreed that the meetings would be reduced to monthly. We continue to meet on Station Road Car Park at 9.30am (Tuesday) and as before, new members are very welcome. Just bring a sketch pad and pencil (or any preferred medium). Although the village Sketch Club is small compared with some clubs in the area, our enthusiasm and enjoyment remain high. If you wish to join and would like more details concerning venues and dates for the remainder of the season, then call 412759 or 621180. We will finish the season with the usual get-together at The White Hart on Tuesday October 29th at 10.00am. Make a note of the date and come along with any ideas for next year. Judging from the welcome influx of new members this year, The Bowls Club is no longer the well kept secret it used to be. Attendances at our Friday evening Social Bowls Nights are at record levels, and the introduction of special arrangements for introducing people new to the game on these evenings has proved very popular. We provide all the equipment needed, and newer members are grouped together with an experienced Skip to play other new members. Come along any Friday night between June and August at about 6.15 and see how you get on. We offer reduced rate membership for members joining late in the season, but at £65 per season, membership of the Bowls Club still rates as incredible value. The Club is now well into its fixtures for the year. We have about 90 fixtures or competitions a year, Mens, Ladies and Mixed, though rarely do we stray too far from Leicestershire, with the exception of an annual trip to the Coast. An increasing proportion of our Saturday fixtures are for
mixed teams this has proved to be very popular, especially for Ladies
unable to play in the week due to work commitments. Quorn Mills Park BC is justifiably renowned for having one of the most attractive bowls greens in the county, and spectators are always made very welcome. Some particularly notable fixtures you may want to watch are Lady Presidents Day (July 14th), Ladies v Gents the hardest fought match of the year for some (July 21st) and The Sponsored Gala on August 18th. For further information contact the Clubs secretary, John
Ventham on 416390 or just turn up on any Friday night. We are located
next to the 'Quorndon Fox '. The first weekend in May saw 17 members of the Quorn Folk Dance Club in Keswick for a weekend of walking, dancing and a theatre visit. The programme included two good walks, one up the Newland Valley on Saturday and Blancathra on Sunday. The club demonstration team danced at Lings Bar Hospital in April displaying the Playford programme and at Calke Abbey at the Bank Holiday at the end of May. The Club acknowledged with sadness the death of HRH Princess Margaret, who became President of the English Folk Dance and Song Society in 1960 and who had given her support since becoming its Patron in 1948. The Club's summer evening sessions are being held on 10th & 24 July and 7th August from 7.30-9.00 pm. We are hoping that the Junior Club will continue in September with weekly country dancing classes each Wednesday evening from 6.00- 7.00 pm. Regular Club evenings begin again on 11th September, 7.30-9.30 pm, and take place in the Village Hall. As always, new and experienced dancers and musicians are very welcome to come along. Our next Barn Dance is on Saturday 30th November, 7.30-11.00 pm, at Humphrey Perkins School, Barrow on Soar. The line up for that night will be local caller Jean Bailey and the band "Bang on the Wall". With this line up of local talent, the event promises to be a good evening of music and dance. For further information on any of the above, please contact
Pauline Kinch on Quorn 413762. At the beginning of the year we were pleased to welcome several new members and we hope they will enjoy, not only our meetings, but also some of our extra activities. Seven members joined Cropston Afternoon WI at their birthday lunch; we have attended the Annual Council Meeting at De Montfort Hall and the Beacon Group meeting at Loughborough. A bread making day at Glenfield and The County Show at Dishley have been other occasions we have enjoyed being involved in. Looking ahead, on July 5th we have an outing to Wisbech Rose Fair and later in the year we hope to visit Chatsworth to see the Christmas decorations in the hall. Beacon Group hope to repeat last year's very successful Band Concert in the Village Hall in October. Meetings are held on the 2nd Friday of each month at 2.15pm in the Church Rooms. If you are new to the village and looking for local contacts, please come and share a couple of hours with us. Your first visit is free. Details of meetings are displayed on the notice board at Quorn Cross. Want to learn new skills? The Leicestershire and Rutland
Federation runs day schools at WI House on Loughborough Road in Leicester.
Non-WI members are welcome to join the classes. We look forward to our Strawberry Tea in June -our Jubilee celebration. During our summer break we support the Diocesan programme of funding Chalet Holidays in Skegness for local needy families. We resume our monthly meetings on the 19th September when
Mrs O Watson will speak on "Fifties / Sixties Air Hostess".
All friends are most welcome to join us. Please ring Jean Newbold on 412786.
Quorn Gardening Club Members Success In the Autumn of 2001, two of our members, Steven Timerick and Joan Williams were selected to take part in UK Style's 'Garden Challenge'. The programmes were televised in March and proved compulsive watching as they both displayed their skills and endurance in creating a garden from design to completion in just 8 hours. Joan repeated this feat with three different gardens as she won through to the semi-finals. An excellent achievement all round. See the 'Village Diary' or monthly posters displayed around
the village for coming events. Quorn Evening Townswomens Guild The Guild in Quorn is fortunate to have approximately forty members and a strong committee of twelve (although we are two short at the moment any offers?) You'll find us good company. Eileen, our Social Secretary is busy arranging outings, some to National Trust properties or to the theatre and securing the best deals for The Group. Visits to Blenheim Palace in June and to Staunton Harold and Melbourne Hall in August, are part of our programme. Recently, we saw "Me and My Girl" at the Town Hall and in September our theatre trip will take us to see "Annie". All the committee are constantly involved in fund-raising,. Events for this year include The Spring Fair in April, a Tombola Stall at the Village May Fair and a strawberry tea on August 27th. Edna is in charge of Programme Planning and endeavours to get the best speakers for our monthly meetings. There is a wide variety of talks planned for future meetings to suit all tastes. All these talks and events are listed in The Quorndon Village
Diary and visitors or new members will be very welcome at any of these.
For more information please contact B. Williams on 412100. Quorn Branch of The Royal British Legion
The Branch now has its own Pipe Band! The former Charnwood Pipe Band was about to be disbanded but has been re-constituted as The Quorn Royal British Legion Pipe Band under Pipe Major Bradley Yates, who until recently, was the pipe major of the City of Leicester Pipe Band. Residents of Quorn heard the band when it undertook its first open-air function at the villages May Day celebrations. There will be another chance to hear it at Beaumanor Hall on 13th July and it will lead the Remembrance Day parade next November. The band is available for bookings and applications should be made to the band secretary, Peter Towers, 71, Melton Road, Barrow-upon-Soar on 01509 - 416070. Website : www.quorndon-mag.org.uk/british_legion/index.html Quorn Phoenix Entertainers contribution to the Jubilee Celebrations took the form of a Cabaret Style Show, which took place in the Village Hall at the end of June. The show was based around 50 Golden Years of the Queens reign as reflected with the debuts of, now well known Musical Shows, starting in the 1950's and culminating in the present day shows, from West Side Story to the Lion King including Oliver, Sound of Music, and Chess. Song, dance and comedy made up the evenings entertainment for the packed Village Hall. There is no rest for the Quorn Phoenix Entertainers at the conclusion of 50 Golden Years. They have commenced rehearsals for their, now, traditional Pantomime. The production this year will be Dick Whittington. Three performances are planned on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd November; evening performances at 7-30 pm with an afternoon matinee on the Saturday at 2.30 pm. It is not to late to join! Male members in particular would
be welcome, mainly for Chorus work. If you are interested in helping backstage,
scenery painting etc, then come along on a Tuesday evening to the Village
Hall from 8.00 pm onwards, and make yourself known, a warm welcome awaits.
At the end of rehearsals, we normally adjourn to a local hostelry to mull
over the evenings events as well as putting the world to rights. The club and its committee are at the moment actively involved raising money to develop new courts and clubhouse, providing long leases are available, and there are sufficient funds. The Club maintains its relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and welcomes new members. Club nights are Wednesday and Friday evenings so why not just come along. More competitive tennis is available, as we have Ladies, Mens and Mixed Squads involved in league fixtures within the county. We have many social events including an annual dinner dance, quiz nights and cheese and wine tournaments, grand barbeque and many more. The Club has a strong Junior and Intermediate section, with
coaching available from our resident coach, Susan Martin, who would welcome
your enquiries on 416056. Rawlins Disabled and Over 50s Swim Group The smart new-look pool has received much praise, and many people have commented how fresh and clean the co-ordinated colour scheme looks. Congratulations to all concerned and especially to Jackie Smith, the Pool Supervisor, for the excellent job shes done on recovering the lobby benches. Our Wednesday session (1.15 2.15pm) is proving popular and we have welcomed a lot of new people. However, I feel sure there are more disabled people out there who could benefit from regular exercise in our nice warm pool. This session was set up for you, so where are you? There is a hoist, easy access steps, disabled loo and its all wheelchair accessible. Please feel free to ring me if you want more information
Megan Hall 212952. Leicestershire Historic Churches Preservation Trust Sponsored Cycle Ride and Walk Each year, since 1982, thirty one County Historic Churches Trusts, all registered charities and grant making bodies to Christian churches and chapels in use, organise within their own counties, a Sponsored Bike Ride (for pedal cyclists and walkers only). This takes place on the second Saturday in September each year. This year it takes place on Saturday 14th September. The objective is to raise money for the participants County Trust and the church or chapel of their choice, the money raised being divided equally between them. Participants plan their own routes, with the assistance of each countys printed list of churches and chapels open and manned on the day. They may of course, cross county borders. This year St Bartholomews United Church is one of the churches open to riders and walkers. The ride is open to everyone. In fact, the more people from outside church congregations that take part, the more successful we shall be in arousing new interest in, and support for, our heritage of church buildings. For more information have a look at this website, which gives full contact details www.leicester.anglican.org/Bikeride/bikeintro.htm And if you cant ride or walk, but would still like to support
the riders and walkers, the Church will be open from 10.00am to 6.00pm. June saw the end of another most successful season for the QMF. The year's programme included talks and visits on such diverse topics as The Euro, and Holiday Memories. The highlight of the programme was a tour and a presentation on Wright's factory in Quorn. Members were given a rare insight into a piece of local history. Along with the traditional products produced from before WWII there were products pushing back the boundaries of technology for the 21st century. Social activities included a Black Pudding and Peas Skittle Evening where the Men joined with the Ladies group in a friendly but serious battle for the highest score. The AGM and Social Event took place in May when, along with the formal business of the election of the Committee, the group was given an entertaining presentation by our local Methodist Minister, Rev. David Leese. The new season starts in September with a 'New Members' meeting where anyone can come along for a friendly chat and a cup of coffee and find out more about the group. The group meets every second Monday in the month in the Wesley room at the back of St. Bartholomews Church at 7.15- 7.30 pm For more details contact Ray Rue on 568959. The New Shakespeare Company in Quorn All the worlds a stage and all the men and women merely players. In January a group of people with a love of Shakespeare and an interest in performing his plays and other classic works met for the first time in Quorn and THE NEW SHAKESPEARE COMPANY was formed. Members of the new Quorn based company felt that, despite there being many excellent amateur groups in the area, there was very little opportunity for local people to get directly involved in large scale performances of Shakespeares plays. With Stratford so close the opportunity for seeing the very best productions is of course available to most of us. However, the cost can be prohibitive to many people and particularly to families. So having at least one large scale production a year on the doorstep at a reasonable cost could be of interest to many particularly students who study the text (and no doubt see the films!) but who may never have seen or been involved in a staged version. The New Shakespeare Company has vaulting ambitions of its own and future plans include outdoor productions of A Midsummer Nights Dream and the Histories as well as workshops, readings and tours of other venues. Our first major production however will be Romeo and Juliet taking place at Rawlins in Quorn from 24th to 26th October 2002. Not just a tragic love story it is a play that explores the effects of bigotry and hatred and, sadly, its themes are as relevant today as they ever were. However, dont expect an evening of all doom and gloom and theatrical beating of breasts. The New Shakespeare Company has some surprises in store. So if you love Shakespeare well expect to see you soon either as part of our next production or as a member of the audience. If you really think that Shakespeare and the classics have nothing to offer you why not give us the chance to persuade you otherwise! If you would like to join a very lively, social and very
unstuffy amateur group dedicated to producing exciting theatre please
call S. Scott on 01509 567176. All are very welcome. Younger Village News 29th July- 2nd August, Volunteers needed. Contact Marcia
Douglas on 622827 Events held during the summer holidays Please contact Malcolm Cox on 622827 Rawlins Under Fives Toy Library - Help Needed Due to commitments with our own children, we are only able to run the toy library until September 2002 and are consequently desperately searching for volunteers to run this successful service. If you are interested you need to be available Friday afternoons between 2 - 4 pm. Duties are putting out the toys, signing out loans and taking the appropriate fee then clearing away afterwards, plus renewal of stock and banking of funds. Please contact us on the 232423, if you are able to help as it will be a shame if this thriving facility has to close after almost 10 years. Monday Brownies now meet at Rawlins Community College as we have too many girls to comfortably use Allen House now. We hope this is only temporary, but we do have a long waiting list. We would also ask parents to place their daughters name on the waiting list early. We had two pack holidays this year in April and May, so we were able to take all the Brownies on a pack holiday. The theme was Olympics. Visits to the cinema, swimming at Beaumont Leys as well as barbeque and games night are included in the Brownies' programme. For more details call Catherine Hewitt on 413963. Holiday Club The United Churches of Quorn will be holding their annual Holiday Club from: Wednesday 21st August to Sunday 25th August. The session each day will run from 10am to 12 noon and is open to children who are currently at school in any school year up to and including year 8. The theme will be "Going Bananas". Come and go bananas with us as we have fun and games, bible stories, songs and craft activities. There will be a family barbecue on the Saturday for which tickets, at a cost of £1.50 per person, will be on sale during Holiday Club. The Sunday session will also be open to all members of the
family. For children at St. Bartholomew's Primary School, application
forms will be distributed by the school at the end of May. For all other
children, application forms will be available from the Holiday Club Office
at Quorn Baptist Church, Meeting Street (01509 621106) also from the end
of May.
