Quorn Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood Watch in Quorn began as a village scheme in the summer of 1994 when a few schemes joined together and with the help of the Parish Council formed a partnership with the Police to provide crime information and to help to create a safer community.

At present over 95% of the roads in the village have a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. If there is not one in your road, why not discuss this with your neighbours and start a scheme. For more information, contact Terry Shrives on 412845.

Quorn is a very attractive and desirable village in which to live. Crime figures are generally low but it only takes the large increase in vehicle crime in January of this year, which almost filled two sides of the February newsletter, to make us all realise that there is no room for complacency . We must all work together with police and be ever vigilant.

There are many millionaires who have made their money at our expense. Burglary, shoplifting, theft from and of motor vehicles affects us all through higher shop prices, higher insurance and very often personal and in extreme cases psychological damage.

Everyone can play a part by making sure that our homes and vehicles are as secure as possible.

If you are at home or away, remember to keep back doors and windows locked
Install some timers for your lights and possibly the radio or TV so that it looks and sounds as though you are at home. You can purchase low energy dusk to dawn lamps at a very low price from the Neighbourhood Watch office at Loughborough Police Station.

Mark your property, particularly electronic goods, with a UV pen. It will soon be possible to buy ‘Smartwater’ through Neighbourhood Watch. This is a unique genetically coded liquid, which allows you to mark your valuables, and if stolen and recovered, can be identified by the police in any part of the Country. For more information telephone the Neighbourhood Watch Office on Monday or Thursday mornings on 0116 248 2542.

Tell your neighbours if you are going to be away and ask them to look after your house.
If you have an alarm, make sure you have at least one key holder registered with the police. Let your Neighbourhood Watch scheme co-ordinator know who the key holder is.

Try to park your car in a secure place and never leave anything lying on the seats. Most cars broken into are because there is something of value left visible to the thief just waiting to be taken.

Mobile phones left in cars are like a shop window display for thieves.

Quorn Neighbourhood Watch is hoping to expand its activities this year. To help this and to pay for, and improve the monthly newsletter, we are asking each household for an annual voluntary contribution of just £1. May we thank you if you have already contributed and if not it is not too late. Please contact your scheme co-ordinator.
