Local Charities

Make a Difference

In the last issue of "The Quorndon", we reported on a number of local charities, which you could help, in a variety of ways, and make a difference. Due to lack of space in the very full Christmas issue, we have to hold this article on The Charnwood Voluntary Sector Mental Health Trust.

The Charnwood Voluntary Sector Mental Health Trust was formed in October 1998, with the aim of co-ordinating and developing user-led mental health services for people living in the Borough of Charnwood. All of the Trust's projects rely on volunteer workers. The Trust currently has four projects:

Charnwood Mental Health Forum aims to promote positive mental health and to challenge the stigma surrounding mental distress. The Forum holds regular open meetings, arranges talks, complementary therapy sessions and runs stalls at public events- offering information on mental health issues. The Forum would be very interested in hearing from anyone who would like to attend meetings or help to staff one of their stalls during a public event.

Charnwood Mental Health Befriending Scheme is for individuals who experience mental health difficulties, and who may feel lonely and isolated. The aim of the Scheme is to match an individual with a volunteer befriender. The Befriending Scheme would be extremely pleased to hear from anyone interested in volunteering. All our Befrienders receive training, regular support and supervision. All befriending relationships are monitored to ensure that supportive and safe friendships are developed.

Welcome House is a drop-in venue in the centre of Loughborough for people with mental health needs. The emphasis of the project is to provide a safe, social environment where members can build upon their friendships, and mutually support each other. Welcome House always needs volunteers to help for a few hours a week and offer friendly informal support to its members. All volunteers will work with a paid worker and receive regular support and supervision.

Charnwood Computer Project provides a safe environment where people who are recovering from mental distress can improve on their existing computer skills, learn new ones, get help with college work, or simply play games. The project also welcomes those who have never used a computer before and wish to learn from the beginning. If you have computer skills that you are willing to share and can spare a couple of hours a week the project would like to hear from you.

If you would like further information regarding any of the above projects, please contact The Trust Development Worker at 17 Southfield Road, Loughborough, LE11 2TS or phone 01509 233475.

Christmas Sleigh Success

Loughborough Round Table is pleased to announce that their Christmas Sleigh collections in the two weeks prior to Christmas Day totalled £4130. £415 of this was collected on the evening of Tuesday 23rd December when the sleigh toured some of the residential areas in Quorn.
The Chairman and members of Loughborough Round Table would like to thank all the Quorn residents who contributed so generously.

The main benefactors of this year's collection are MENPHYS who look after mental and physically handicapped patients and the Loughborough based charity, STEPS.

Cancer Research UK – Loughborough & District

Our local fundraising group, together with the charity shop in Loughborough, aim to raise vital funds to enable our doctors and scientists to continue their work. They strive to improve cancer prevention and treatment and help cure cancer patients faster but they rely heavily on volunteers to provide these funds.

In Loughborough and the surrounding villages we already have people who are giving their time to help raise much needed funds. However, we would like some new faces to join us, both male and female. The time we give is up to each one of us, depending how much we can spare. New volunteers are needed to help in different ways:

Monthly meetings when we plan our fundraising activities, which include concerts, dances, stalls, flag days, cake stalls, coffee mornings, sponsored walks etc.
Occasional help when we need extra hands to help with events.
Volunteers to work in the Cancer Research UK shop in Market Street, Loughborough.

Something to suit everyone! And helping in any of these ways enables us to meet other people interested in the fight against cancer. Could you consider giving a little of your time?

Our next event is on Thursday 22 April at Quorn Church Rooms at 7pm, when:
BBC Radio Leicester’s ‘Down to Earth’, gardening programme will be recorded. This will be followed by a Ploughman's Supper and a glass of wine.

Tickets cost £5, and are available from Shirley Buckley on 01509 620097.

Come Fly with Utterly Butterly!! Could you do it?

On the 18th July Rainbows Children’s Hospice is looking for two people to take part in the most exciting white knuckle ride this year.

The ride is a wing walk. You will board a plane (on top of course) and make your way up to a 1000 ft in the sky. When you are over the show ground in Loughborough you will perform an amazing series of dips and bends for all to see dropping to 250ft. You will be able to experience the thrill of performing to a crowd of 5,000 and the elation of being high in the sky.
It will be the most remarkable experience you have ever had and it lasts 31 minutes so you will never ever forget the day you wing walked! Steve Toon a volunteer for Rainbows who took the challenge in 2000 says, “It is the most exhilarating experience you will ever have”.

For more information on this amazing challenge call: Sarah on 01509 638026, Steve on 0116 2705964 or Brian on 01509 239750.

Ed: If the brave volunteer(s) comes from Quorn, "The Quorndon" will make a donation to Rainbows on their behalf.

Do you look after an older person?

If you do look after someone aged 65 years or older and you would like a break from your caring responsibilities, then the New FREE Respite Care Directory could be for you.

The Respite Care Directory brings together information about services provided by social services, health services, private and charitable/voluntary sector organisations into one easy to use reference book, which will be available to both carers and care workers.

It provides information on services such as:

Residential Care
Nursing Home Care
Day Centres, Drop-ins, Clubs and Support Groups
Care Attendant Schemes
Sitting Services
Luncheon Clubs.

It includes such information as how to gain access to these services, how much it will cost, whom to contact in the organisation etc. Other useful contact numbers are also listed.
The directory will hopefully help you, as the carer, to get the break that you need whether this is for a couple of hours a week or for a longer, more occasional break.

The directory has been produced by CLASP -The Carers Centre on behalf of The Primary Care Trust's of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. If you would like a FREE copy of the Respite Care Directory then please contact CLASP -The Carers Centre on 0116 2510999 or email us at leicester.carers@virgin.net

We look forward to hearing from you.
