Holloway House Opens The new AbbeyPield House in Quorn (called Holloway House after a generous legacy left by Mr Dudley Holloway in 1990) took in its first resident, Gladys Cooper. on January 22. On January 25 Miss Mary Holloway, Dudley's sister, unveiled a granite stone from Mountsorrel Quarry inscribed with the name. At the same ceremony the keys were formally handed over to the Abbeyfield Quorn society by the builders, William Davis of Loughborough, and the house was blessed by the Bishop of Leicester in the presence of about 100 guests comprising volunteers, supporters, benefactors, patrons and contractors. After 10 years the 'Project' had suddenly become a 'House'. The cost was £750.000 over one third of which was raised by Abbeyfiield Quorn, the rest coming from the Housing Corporation, Charnwood Borough Council and a mortgage. The land on which the House stands was generously gifted by Quorn Football Club when they moved to their new ground on Farley Way. Villagers had an opportunity to look round the House during a well supported Open Day in February. Other events are planned, including the Open Gardens on Saturday June22 and Sunday June 23. Holloway House accommodates 12 elderly people and a resident housekeeper (Pat Pawley), with domestic assistance. Each resident has a self-furnished bed-sitting room with an ensuite bathroom, their own key, complete freedom to come and go as they choose, and can have friends and relatives to visit at any time. The housekeeper serves mid-day and evening meals in the communal lounge/dining room. The House is managed by a committee of Abbeyfield volunteers. It is open to all and is non-profit making.
