"The Quorndon" Virtual Reading Club
The Book of the Quarter this time is:
Mary Wesley's "A Sensible Life".
This
is another of Mary Wesley's witty, stylish comedies of romantic love set
in the middle/upper class world between the two World Wars. In her seventh
novel, Wesley explores the undercurrents in friendships and family ties
of a group of international vacationers. Wesley specialises in British
social settings of a latter year, and has a wonderfully keen observation
of characters. This book provides an intesting contrast to last quarter's
"The Wild Swans".
Initially meeting in 1926 at Dinard in Brittany, the group
forever retains the ties forged on this holiday. Flora Trevelyan, a ten-year-old
misfit, has been left to her own devices by her self-obsessed parents.
Amongst the elegant middle-class families holidaying there she finds kindness
from Felix, son of a Dutch baroness, best friends Cosmo and Hubert; and
the Leigh family, as she is peripherally included in their gracious circles.
Understandably she falls in love - with Cosmo - with Hubert - with Felix,
though it takes forty years for the love affairs to be explored, consummated,
and finally resolved.
Reviewers have described this book as Wesley's most engaging
and memorable novel so far; as a finely nuanced story features an enchanting
heroine: Wesley's description of the proper but callous behaviour of the
British upper classes is both savagely acute and quietly funny.
As usual there are multiple copies available in Quorn Library,
together with comment postcards. Our thanks to the Leicestershire Library
Service for their continued support.
We hope to bring you comments on "The Wild Swans"
in the next issue of "The Quorndon".
